you keep talking about the cost of healthcare: you do realize that america has the most expensive healthcare system in the entire world?[1] and despite the expense, we’re still not as healthy as many other countries (all with free healthcare).
p.s. global warming is happening: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f4/Instrumental_Temperature_Record.png
it only takes a google search.
First, on healthcare, yes I do realize that America has some of the most expensive healthcare, however the point your missing is the reasons that the healthcare is expensive over here. I’m all for Tort Reform (stopping some of the BS lawsuits against Doctors i.e. unneccesary malpractice suites) and I have no problem with the many free health care clinics. However, I do not see nor beleive that universal healthcare would do anything but cripple our economy. I’ll use the many places with “free” healthcare (because it would not be free, I’d just be paying for your medical treatment) such as Canada and England. The waiting times in those countries for simple procedures are long and more often than not people die before they get a chance to receive the care (cancer treatment is among one of the longest waiting times). Besides that, why do we need this universal healthcare anyways? We have free clinics in nearly all major cities (the wait time may be long, but thats a small price for free care) and if its an emergency the Emergency room will cover the cost (and the tax payer) if you don’t have insurance. Also, I have no faith that the proposed system will work (look at Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, all projected to be COMPLETELY bankrupt in 2036) We simply don’t have the money and I don’t beleive the government knows better than me what needs to be done concerning MY health.
P.S. The latest (largely ignored) EPA report actually shows that we have been in a cooling trend the past 5-6 years. There are a lot of stats and good info both at http://www.isthereglobalcooling.com also read Unstoppable Global Warming, I have the book in my Page Turners section, you can find it at your local library.
no epa report has shown, in of itself, that there is any form of a “cooling trend.” in fact, the epa still maintains a significant and scientifically identified warming trend (note, 1998 being warmer than any proceeding year is not a challenge to global warming, check the graph). [1] as for this report, despite your lack of clarification, i would have to assume that you are referring to the report by alan carlin. first of all, that report does not necessarily concern itself with temperature change; the report is an analysis of the latest epa recommendations on co2 regulations. secondly, the author, carlin, is not actually a scientist – he’s an economist; he has no formal training or experience in climate science. the real debate is not on whether or not global warming is happening… the debate is on the mechanisms on which warming occurs, and how we may be able to reverse it. i agree our science is difficult in this respect, but in determining a warming trend, our science is wholly sufficient. [2]
Nate- the average temperature of the planet has been progressively getting cooler since the early part of this century. That is a fact. Now, do I think that somthing is going on? Yes. However I put it like this: Who’s theory is right? There are several “theories”, which are unproven all around, however with the research that I have done on the subject, I happen to beleive most in natural global warming, and that is why I recommended the book to you, Unstoppable Global Warming. I encourage you to read that book before you make a solid decision as to whether or not beleive in CO2 caused global warming. Just one little fact that is brought up in the book is the fact that the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere that has been put there by us is SO MINISCULE (I honestly can not recall the exact number off hand, however it is much less than one percent) that to make an argument for CO2 global warming based on this alone is ludicrous. Another example is the whole polar bear fallocy. There are actually so many polar bears that areas up north are having problems with them eating their livestock/neighbors. Seriously, don’t take my word for it. Read the book and the many facts that support a seperate theory than what you hear every day, then get back with me.
travis – the average temperature of the planet, as recorded by surface level instrumentation, has consistently been found to be rising, and rising @ a greater and greater rate [1]..
that is a fact. now, we both appear to be claiming contrary propositions to be facts. what is causing this discrepancy? well, i took it upon myself to follow the sources of your source (the clearly antagonistic, “isthereglobalcooling.com”): what i found was that all of the data supporting the claims of this site are derived from satellite readings of non-surface level temperatures. now what i wanted to find was what the difference was between these two forms of measurement, i wanted to know why they led to seemingly contrary conclusions. this is what i found: first of all, satellite records are only indicative of temperatures above the areas measured by surface level instrumentation. secondly, the data used by your sources is outdated and inaccurate; due to the tremendous inconsistencies between surface level trends and satellite reports as well as the inconsistencies between numerous satellite reports (surface level readings have a greater rate of confidence), researches had to examine the methodology of satellite readings more closely. what they found was that early satellite readings suffered from numerous inaccuracies… given correcting adjustments, the satellite data largely supports the current climate model of global warming [2]. isn’t it strange that your sources don’t mention anything at all about any of this? do you think you might have been deceived?
lastly, concerning my position of the power of human-induced co2 emissions: i don’t know. arguably, we can’t be sure as of now. we simply do not understand climate change well enough to make any sort of certain conclusions (or so it seems). if you noticed, i outlined that i felt that the science, on this matter, was “difficult.” i was simply taking issue with your ignorance on the matter of a rather secured reality, the fact that the globe is warming.
because of the magnificent complexity of this issue, and because of the dynamics involved, i don’t have much want for typing up a novel here and going bonkers on the footnotes. if you want to have an organized and respectful debate on socialized medicine, perhaps on your show, i would be more than happy to offer a dissenting view.
I am always up for dissenting view, Nathaniel, and especially debate. Shoot me a way to contact you and your availability at my email, mattersofopinion@yahoo.com
First of all, Nate, I shot you one of SEVERAL sources that I have found contrary to the popular beleif of global warming. I know all about the above, I have read up on the opposite side of my belief as well, but what your not taking into account with surface temperatures (or at least your sources aren’t) is something mentioned in Unstoppable Global Warming (which is, admittedly, much better than the website that I gave you as far as being organized and backing up data). And that is the fact that a majority of these stations for reading the temperature are stationed in city/rural areas, and because of the growth of highways, more houses, larger skyscrapers, etc.etc., there is naturally more asphalt and concrete, which absorbs heat and gives inacurate data on the ground that is MUCH worse than the before mentioned satellite data. What it basically comes down to for me on this issue is three questions: Is there global warming? A LOT of scientists and different graphs are saying that it is, A LOT are saying that it isn’t, so I’ll call that one a coin flip. Is it man made global warming? As you even said, the science is in its infancy, but I implore you to look up/remember (I’m obviously not sure of your age) the Newsweek article and articles across the US saying that we were going towards Global Cooling and that in ten years we would have an ice age. The third question is: Is there anything we can do to stop it? I don’t know about this one, but I will ask you this: In an age of air conditioners and ease of mobility amongst people, global warming would not be as bad as it is being played out. Aside from more severe storms, which we have the shelter and technology to prevent injury or death because of it, areas that would become flooded would have ample time to move. Areas that become desserts would have the same amount of time. I understand this may sound a little over optimistic, but if it is PROVEN to be a problem that we must do something about than because of modern day technology and a human race that is more intelligent than any other time period before, we would and could handle those situations. As I said above, that was just the first web site that came into my mind when I was responding, and in hindsight it isn’t as good as many others. Unstoppable Global Warming is still my favorite, and truly the best, at discussing this topic in depth. Also, pick any of the over 3000 scientists/geologists/meteorologists that have signed on to Ron Pauls recent bill to stop all things like cap and trade and have an honest open debate about this, which I’ll note, Al Gore has refused to have.
