“The New Black Panther Party (NBPP), whose formal name is the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, is a U.S.-based black supremacist organization founded in Dallas, Texas in 1989.”
Straight from Wikipedia. Granted, this is the NEW Black Panther Party, however these are the members that we see now a days (and are for example the members that during the election stopped white voters from voting in certain voting stations). Note the line “black supremacist”. Yes, Nate, they are a racist organization. Maybe at one point in time they weren’t, when the Civil Rights movement was happening and they played an important part in liberating the black population, but not today.
you’re referring to an organization that has nothing whatsoever (aside from an adopted name) to do with the original black panther membership or movement. if you continue to read the introduction on the wikipedia article, you will find that legitimate panthers have blasted the organization and have reported it illegitimate and entirely independent of the original foundation.
you said, “black panthers,” you didn’t say “new black panthers.” of course i was going to assume you were referring to the historical and widely known black panthers party.
Nate: I did read the entire article. The Black Panther Party as it was has fallen apart and is no more, so although older members may criticize the New Black Panthers for practicing hate, regardless, the fact is that if you talk about the Black Panthers today you are talking about that racist organization. Forgive me for not going through a history lesson on the show, seeing as it was a comment comparing and contrasting different groups (and even the old Black Panther Party could be said to be racist, what with their call for reperations and socialist views that the government must take care of them simply because they are black. Don’t get me wrong, they did do some good in helping with civil rights, but equal rights does not mean one color gets more rights than another.)
the black panthers aren’t racist; they worked in alliance with several predominately white revolutionist groups, like the weather underground.
